Mamelodi Sundowns are edging closer to defending their league title as they plot for another three points when they face Chippa United in the Betway Premiership.
Sundowns will host the Chilli Boys at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night. The game will get underway at 7:30pm.
The Brazilians are still on top of the standings on 61 points, while chasers Orlando Pirates are behind them on 52 after their hard-fought 2-1 win over Golden Arrows on Tuesday.
Race to finish line
Sundowns have four games remaining in the league, while the Buccaneers have six.
Ahead of their encounter against Chippa, who are looking to solidify their spot inside the top eight, Masandawana striker Iqraam Rayners says they are wary of the threat the Eastern Cape-based side may pose to their mission to annexe another league title.
“The mood has always been good, especially at camp, between the players and the technical team. I would like to believe that we are in a good space after last weekend’s game [against Cape Town City],” Rayners told Sundowns media.
Goal is three points
“It’s always difficult to play teams like Chippa because they are fighting for their lives to ensure they make it to the top eight, and it will be important to get maximum points.
“It’s always going to be good for a team like Chippa United to play against a team like Mamelodi Sundowns. They are going to make things hard for us, but we just need to take the game to the next level and get the maximum points.
“I know there’s quality in that team, and we know they are going to pose serious threats. We are looking forward to the game tomorrow,” Rayners concluded.
Sundowns and Chippa will meet again soon, when they confront each other at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium next Wednesday.
