Teko picks Euro 24 favorites, likens Mofokeng to Spain’s star

Former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star Teko Modise has predicted who his money will be on at the upcoming Euro 2024 that kicks off on Friday between hosts Germany and Scotland.

Modise also pointed out which player Orlando Pirates teenage sensation Relebohile Mofokeng should be watching, as they share similar attributes.

Twenty-four nations will battle it out for the ultimate prize in the much-anticipated European international competition.

On Wednesday, SuperSport hosted the five-a-side tournament at Discovery Park in Wanderers, Johannesburg, where former football stars, content creators, and members of the media gathered to enjoy the build-up to Euro 2024.

Kings of Europe

The likes of Bongani Khumalo, Dikgang Mabalane, Stanton Fredericks, Josta Dladla, Junior Khanye, and Modise formed part of the five-a-side tournament.

Speaking to the media after the tournament, Modise said he sees Spain as the kings of Europe and France suffering the biggest upset at Euro 24.

“Spain [will win], and the biggest upset will be France,” Modise said.

“And that is because it’s a team [France] that will probably think that they deserve to win because they were in the finals, nearly defended the World Cup, and won the Euros not long ago.

“They also have a superstar [Kylian Mbappe], who is a captain, and all the youngsters that all play in the top leagues and just won the Champions League.

“So, France is a team that is sometimes overconfident going into the games, and I think that might be the biggest upset.”

Spain will win Euro 24

Modise continued: “I think Spain will win it because there is a paradigm shift going on there.

“Their women’s team won the World Cup, and the men’s team got eliminated in the semi-finals of the last Euros, so they have been building from there, and there is something in that team that might spark them to relive the memories of the Sergio Busquets era.”

Meanwhile, he said the Pirates young sensation should model his game around 16-year-old Barcelona and Spain’s rising star Lamine Yamal.

“I think Mofokeng should watch Yamal because his maturity is something similar to Mofokeng,” Modise added.

“I just hope that all footballers will be watching the Euros to learn something and see what they can improve on, because it would be sad to see Mofokeng not improve his numbers or do better next season.”
