After what has been a big week of festivities and Nedbank Cup triumph celebrations, Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has urged his players to remain humble and focus on the task of finishing inside the top eight.
Amakhosi are currently sitting at number nine in the Betway Premiership log standings and are tied at 30 points with Chippa United and Marumo Gallants, with two games remaining.
Chiefs have been blowing hot and cold throughout the season with mixed results, despite starting their campaign on a positive note.
However, having already delivered a trophy in the Amakhosi cabinet nine years later, Nabi could save their disappointing campaign by also finishing inside the top eight.
Celebrations need to end
“We must remain humble. Yes, there will be a lot of joy and celebrations, but at some point, those celebrations need to end for us to be able to concentrate on the task ahead,” Nabi said shortly after being crowned the Nedbank Cup champions.
“We have a game to prepare for on Saturday [against Sekhukhune United], so we need to focus on that.
“Also, when we won our semifinal against Mamelodi Sundowns, we lost the next league game [against Gallants], probably because we were still excited.”
He continued: “But we now need to understand that this is Kaizer Chiefs, a big club, and winning a trophy should never be taboo but a habit for us.
“So, we can’t say we have redeemed ourselves because the season is not done yet, and we must fight with every ounce in our last two games against tough opponents to finish inside the top eight, because that is another objective of the club.”
Last league victory on March 4
The Glamour Boys last recorded a league victory on March 4 when they produced a slender 1-0 win over Magesi FC.
They have since lost four and drawn three of their last seven and will be desperate to return to winning ways in the league.
They go up against a Babina Noko side that is on a high and have a mission to secure the CAF Confederations Cup spot for next season.
Chiefs and Sekhukhune will clash at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. The match kicks off at 3pm.
