Apart from admitting to having previously taken the MTN8 as a pre-season cup competition, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena says that narrative has changed.
Mokwena’s side will be going all out to deliver the new-look Wafa Wafa trophy back to Chloorkop.
Sundowns welcome Moroka Swallows in the first quarter-final encounter at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Despite their recent dominance in local football, it is no secret that the Brazilians have not had much success in the MTN8 cup competition.
Sundowns have only managed to win four Wafa Wafa trophies, with their last coming during the 2021/22 season.
Speaking to the media during the MTN8 launch at the MultiChoice studios in Randburg on Thursday, Mokwena emphasized that his mandate is to win every trophy.
“We will go as far as we can [in the tournament], we have to start by trying to win every match and win every single trophy, and the MTN8 is no different,” Mokwena said.
“It is going to be difficult to play against Swallows, they are a strong team with good players, and we must make sure that we are prepared for what is going to be a difficult encounter.”
Standing in his way is former star midfielder Andile Jali and assistant coach Steve Komphela, who has since taken the reigns at the Dube Birds.
Mokwena noted that Komphela knows their system but will not be tempted to change his style of play.
Kick-off is at 3pm.
