Why Victor Osimhen will go down as a Napoli legend

Victor Osimhen will join the late Diego Maradona and go down in history books as a club legend after steering Napoli to the first Italian Serie A league title after 33 years.

Osimhen scored the equalising goal during their 1-1 draw against Udinese at the Dacia Arena on Thursday night, a goal that would turn out to be the title decider.

Napoli last won the Scudetto during the Maradona era in 1987 and 1990.

The team from Naples trailed the game 13 minutes in, when midfielder Sandi Lovric found the top corner after being set up by Destiny Udogie and went into half-time with a one goal advantage.

Luciano Spalletti’s charges came back fired up in the second half and their resilience paid off in the 52nd minute when Osimhen stepped up once again and scored his 22nd goal of the season in 28 league appearances.

After the final whistle, the traveling supporters went into a frenzy and streamed onto the pitch to celebrate the historic moment with the players.

Osimhen has been instrumental for Napoli throughout the season, with the Nigerian striker stamping his authority in the Serie A as the most feared striker to go up against. His partnership with Georgian star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is also one that will never be forgotten, making them the fan favorites.

The 24-year-old also broke the record of Cameroonian Samuel Eto of scoring the most Serie A goals in a single season as an African player.

Winning the Scudetto couldn’t have come at a better time, years after the death of their legend Maradona and after their stadium was renamed to honor the Argentine.
