After losing yet another cup game to Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns will be more than desperate to return to winning ways on Wednesday night.
Sundowns will be going up against a highly confident and in-form Kaizer Chiefs in a Betway Premiership humdinger at FNB Stadium. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7.30pm.
The reigning league champions were knocked out of the MTN8 semi-final by Pirates on penalties at the weekend, and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams said the team is still feeling down from the defeat but will look to bounce back at the expense of Amakhosi.
Williams said: “The guys are still a bit down, and the mood is not one of the best because we had big objectives, which was to start the campaign on a positive note by going all the way to the MTN8 final, but it was not meant to be.
“We now need to regroup and prepare for the upcoming big assignment against Kaizer Chiefs, which we eagerly anticipate.”
Williams continued: “There is no need for us not to go into that game with confidence. We have not lost a game in open play since the start of the season.”
“There is a lot of uneasiness from our side, and we have not settled yet, but we know that we have enough to go out and get a result.”
Chiefs exude confidence
Sundowns have won their last three games against Chiefs at FNB Stadium, beating Amakhosi 5-1, 2-1, and 4-0, respectively.
However, he noted that this time, the Glamour Boys are in exceptional form and exude confidence, making it a completely different game.
“We have won against Chiefs in the last few seasons by going to FNB and achieving positive results there. But we know it’s going to be a different ball game now because they’ve got the confidence.
“So, we need to go there and give an extra 10% because we’ve started the games extremely well. It’s towards the end of the games where we’ve let ourselves down.”
Amakhosi are currently joint log leaders with Sekhukhune United on nine points after three games, while Sundowns go into the encounter sitting at number four with seven points.
