There’s still more trophies to play for – Rulani Mokwena

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena says that despite losing the MTN8 final in heartbreaking fashion to Orlando Pirates, they still have other trophies to play for this season.

With the PSL introducing the 16-team Carling Knockout Cup, there is also the Nedbank Cup in store towards the end of the season.

Last season, Sundowns only lifted the DStv Premiership title, after an easy campaign, more like a walk in the park, winning the trophy with about seven matches remaining on their fixture schedule.

The Brazilians were defeated 3-1 via penalty shoot-outs following one of the most boring cup finals in Mzansi.

The terrible weather conditions in Durban did not help matters, in fact, the dreadful wind contributed to the drab affair with both teams struggling to play their normal flowing brand of football.

“There are still many trophies to compete for and plenty of games ahead, and we will surely bounce back. It is a pity, but we gave it our all. We will bounce back; it is a difficult one to digest, but we always find a way to recover. Once again, I am proud of the team and their efforts. We win as a team, we lose as a team and that is the most important message. We extend our apologies to our supporters and the Yellow Nation family,” Mokwena said.

It was the Buccaneers’ third silverware in two seasons. Last season, they lifted the same MTN8 trophy and closed the season by snatching the Nedbank Cup against Sekhukhune United.

In all fairness, Sundowns’ local club competition woes continue. They were the favourites to nail Pirates, after they waltzed past them in a league match last month. But it was not to be as the Buccaneers came out tops via the heroics of goalkeeper Sipho Chaine during the penalty kicks.

The agile shot-stopper saved Sundowns’ three spot-kicks, paving the way for a comfortable win and for the Buccaneers to defend their trophy.

Sundowns will enjoy the Fifa international break and will resume their league campaign at the end of the month with a tricky match against Moroka Swallows, who are trained by their former assistant coach Steve Komphela.
