Speaking to those in the know, coaching courses are free at grassroots level. “There are different ways in which coaching courses are conducted. Sometimes the courses are conducted by LFAs (local football associations) and those are sponsored, so they become free.
If they are conducted by regions, you may pay,” says young coach Sinesipho Mali, who started at grassroots and was until recently serving as a scout for Kaizer Chiefs.
“I paid R16 000 for my CAF B Licence and I see now CAF A Licence is R7 000, probably sponsored, somehow.
So it depends, there is no standard or set price for this,” added Mali, but it’s not clear yet what the CAF Pro Licence costs.
Based on Sunday World’s research, the UEFA A Licence costs €530 (R9 500) in Germany, €1 200 (R21 500) in Spain, €2 350 (R42 200) in Ireland and £4 390 (R91 400) in England.
The UEFA Pro Licence can cost €7 550 (R135 600) in Ireland and £7 595 (R158 100) in England.
South African coaches with a UEFA Pro Licence include former Bafana Bafana players Benni McCarthy and Steven Pienaar.
