Thuli Madonsela on State Capture Inquiry

Johannesburg – South Africa’s longest-running corruption inquiry with a price tag of over R3 billion has concluded.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to receive part one of the State Capture inquiry report this afternoon.

South African former Public Protector, Advocate, and Professor of law Thuli Madonsela says the core of this inquiry is whether the minister of finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene was wrongfully fired because he was standing in the way of the business interest of companies co-owned by the former President’s son and the Gupta family.

She further said the state capture inquiry she ordered was supposed to focus on firing Nene and should have been concluded in 6 months.

Although she is not impressed with the duration of the inquiry, Madonsela seems rather optimistic about the report and says, “This is a very significant day in the history of our country and hopefully the possibility of a new chapter in making sure that democracy is not hijacked”.

“Just knowing the truth gives us an opportunity to fix what has been broken,” she said.
