Six cops have been arrested for stealing close to R38 000 from a car at a lockdown roadblock in Pretoria.
It is alleged that the members of the SA Police Services (SAPS) had already been paid a bribe of R100 when they stole 37 900 during a search of the car on the old Bronkhorstspruit and Witbank last Saturday.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the officers also demanded bribes from other motorists who failed to provide the correct documentation including travelling permits,” said Gauteng community safety spokesperson Ofentse Morwane.
The officers appeared at the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate Court yesterday and were released on a bail of R7000 each. They are expected to appear in court again on Friday, June 26.
Earlier this month, three members of the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) were arrested and charged with theft, defeating the ends of justice and corruption for soliciting a R1500 bribe.
Gauteng SAPS commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, said they would continue to bring to book officers involved in illegal activities.
“We will not hesitate to arrest and we will continue to arrest our members who engage in criminal activities. These members have shown that they are criminals and we will treat them as such. We cannot afford to have criminals who disguise with our uniform and badges whilst committing their illegal deeds.”
