SA Covid-19 deaths rise to 131

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa has shot up to 6783, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said on Sunday.

The total number of deaths has also risen to 131 after 8 more people succumbed to the novel virus.

Western Cape has the majority of reported cases at 3045, followed by Gauteng with 1624 confirmed cases and KwaZulu-Natal with 1076.

Eastern Cape has 774 cases, Free State 122, Mpumalanga 46, Limpopo 37, North West 36 and Northern Cape 24.

Mkhize said the country was ramping up its testing efforts.

“We also wish to indicate that as of 30 April 2020, 7 216 277 citizens have been screened and from that community screening programme 72 087 were referred for testing,” Mkhize said.

“We thank all these compatriots for their solidarity with the programme and allowing our health care workers into the privacy of their homes.”
