Award-winning rapper fights tooth and nail to stay out of prison

Embattled hip-hop artist Emtee is putting up a fight to stay out of jail after his estranged wife got him arrested for allegedly beating her up in a domestic fight that dented his image.

Sunday World can exclusively reveal that the award-winning rapper’s lawyers have submitted representations to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) requesting it not to criminally prosecute Emtee for allegedly assaulting Nicole Kendall Chinsamy, who was seven-months pregnant at the time of the alleged attack.

The Manando hitmaker, who was released on bail by the Midrand magistrate’s court after handing himself over to the Midrand police, is likely to face off with his wife in a trial if the NPA rejects his representations.

News that Emtee, real name Mthembeni Ndevu, has submitted representations to the law-enforcement authority, was revealed by a source close to the case.

The mole, who did not want to be identified because he is not allowed to speak to the media, said Emtee will present the representations when he appears in court on Tuesday.

Some of the representations, said the deep throat, were submitted a few days after he was charged for assault, and the outcome was supposed to have been announced in court on Tuesday, April 25.

“It appears there was a delay because the presentation of the representations will be made further on Tuesday,” said the tipster.

The source added that Emtee also asked for mediation between him and Chinsamy, with the hope of finding an amicable solution instead of going on trial.

Mediation is a process by which a mediator assists the parties in a legal dispute by, among others, facilitating discussions between them and assisting them to identify issues and exploring areas of compromise.

“In fact, mediation talks were supposed to have also taken place on April 25 but I’m not sure if they happened or they are still going to happen,” said the source.

The gender-based violence (GBV) allegation hogged the headlines when a viral video, posted on March 3, portrayed the talented songwriter having an argument with Chinsamy and her mother in their marital home.

Emtee is heard asking his mother-in-law what she was doing in their pad, to which she responded that she was there to protect her daughter from him.

Chinsamy is also seen walking towards the camera with her cellphone in hand to show a picture of her bruised and swollen eye due to the alleged assault. She is also seen pointing to injuries she sustained during the alleged GBV incident.

”This is what he did to me. Show them what you did to me, how you beat me up on Valentine’s Day. Here is the proof. Beat me up while I’m seven-months pregnant,” she said.

In his response, Emtee could be heard denying the allegations and saying she was fabricating the assault, which has the potential to be kryptonite to his career.

NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwana confirmed that Emtee will appear in court on Tuesday for representations.
