Criselda Kananda leads Malibongwe Arts Festival’s bold new era

The Malibongwe Arts Festival’s Tribute to Women concert has always been a soulful celebration of feminine excellence, but under the leadership of Criselda Kananda, it is poised to make a deeper impact.

Named ambassador of the Tribute to Women concert and chairperson of the newly launched Malibongwe Arts Festival Foundation, Kananda is bringing vision and purpose to the festival’s legacy.

Multidimensional pioneer

A celebrated broadcaster, global health advocate, former presidential appointee, and social entrepreneur, Kananda has spent over a decade advancing women’s causes in health, education, media, and leadership.

Her work simplifying health for South African audiences makes her a fitting steward for a festival rooted in empowerment.

“The Malibongwe Arts Festival Foundation is more than an event. It is a movement,” she said.

“We are building a legacy to empower women, particularly in arts and culture. By providing skills, visibility, and resources to thrive. Our stories can transform the world.”

Launched this year, the foundation focuses on women in marginalised communities. It offers education, entrepreneurship training, and cultural upliftment. Through partnerships with government and private sectors, it aims to foster social cohesion and economic growth.

Art’s transformative power

This mission aligns with the 2025 Tribute To Women concert, set for Sunday, August 24, at Mark’s Park in Emmarentia, Joburg. It will showcase musical brilliance while highlighting art’s transformative power.

Festival Director Joe Chakela praised Kananda’s appointment.

“Her life reflects wellness, justice, and representation. This platform bridges celebration with impact, making this year’s festival truly special.”

Under Kananda’s leadership, the event promises to amplify women’s voices and create lasting change. It will ensure the festival’s legacy resonates far beyond the stage. The event will release their line-up and lifestyle activations soon.
