Berita, Tresor gearing up to set Joy of Jazz 2025 alight

The 26th installment of the annual Standard Bank Joy of Jazz (SBJOJ) is set to ignite the Sandton Convention Centre from September 26 to 28, marking a historic milestone as the festival expands to three days for the first time.

With over 60 artists from across the globe, four vibrant stages, and an electric atmosphere, this soul-stirring celebration promises to be Africa’s biggest jazz party yet.

From smooth melodies to high-energy jams, the SBJOJ 2025 is poised to have Mzansi buzzing with excitement.

Since its inception in 1997, the SBJOJ has grown into a cultural juggernaut, drawing more than 36 000 fans in 2024 alone.

The festival has hosted legends like Hugh Masekela while championing fresh voices, creating a unique space where international stars and South African talent converge.

Taking jazz to new heights

This year’s line-up is a testament to that legacy, featuring a dynamic mix of performances across the Dinaledi, Conga, Diphala, and Mbira stages.

Each stage offers a distinct vibe, from the storytelling and tradition of Mbira to the cutting-edge, foot-stomping energy of Diphala.

Standout acts include guitarist Billy Monama’s Guitar Convergence, a soulful collaboration with Mose Mogale and Vusi Mahlasela.

Making her SBJOJ debut, singer-songwriter Berita is set to captivate with her silky vocals, while Congolese star Tresor, known for his electrifying presence, promised “fireworks”.

Festival producer Mantwa Chinoamadi shared her excitement about the three-day expansion of the musical event.

“We are taking jazz to new heights, celebrating creativity, and bringing people together through music,” she told Sunday World.

Her vision underscores the festival’s role as more than just a music event; it’s a cultural force that boosts Johannesburg’s tourism and local economy.

Jozi’s unrivalled vibrancy

In addition to packing Sandton’s hotels and dining establishments, the surge of tourists highlights Jozi’s unrivalled vibrancy as a world city.

Beyond the music, the SBJOJ is a celebration of connection and heritage.

The Mbira stage will weave narratives rooted in African traditions, while Dinaledi and Conga will deliver a spectrum of smooth and lively performances.

Whether you’re a jazz aficionado or simply drawn to the festival’s infectious vibe, there’s something for everyone.

“[The] SBJOJ is where the world meets South Africa’s soul,” Chinoamadi added, capturing the essence of the iconic event.
