Eswatini’s royal legacy steals spotlight in Shaka iLembe

Mzansi Magic’s Shaka iLembe is in episode two of the second season and kicks off with a historic celebration of the Swati heritage.
Tonight’s episode introduces the Ngwane royal lineage – King Somhlolo, Queen Lojiba, and Princess Hletjiwe in a dazzling tribute to Eswatini’s rich history that’s set to captivate the continent.
“We’re beyond excited to bring the Swati story into *Shaka iLembe*,” says Nomsa Philiso, CEO of General Entertainment at MultiChoice. “This is a proud moment for African storytelling, reminding us how our histories are woven together and showcasing our vibrant cultures to the world.”

Triumphant first season

Fresh off a triumphant first season that scooped 12 SAFTAs and redefined African TV, Shaka iLembe Season 2 raises the bar by embracing Eswatini’s royal legacy. This milestone was made possible with the blessing of His Majesty King Mswati III, who met with Bomb Productions in 2024 to share insights into Swati heritage.
“His Majesty’s stories about Ingwenyama Somhlolo brought incredible depth to our work,” says Executive Producer Desiree Markgraaff.
Authenticity was key. Prince Sicelo, the production’s cultural advisor, ensured every detail honoured Swati traditions.
“We cast every Swati role with local Eswatini talent,” he says.
The result? A stellar lineup featuring Setsabile Masina Sithole as Queen Lojiba, Sikhanyiso Sithole as Princess Hletjiwe, Ayanda Ginindza as Ingwenyama Somhlolo, Thobejane Magagula as Prince Ngemu, and Alex Fakudze as Umnganiwemakhosi. These performers bring pride and power to the screen, making tonight’s episode a must-see.
The Swati influence goes beyond the storyline, infusing the show with unforgettable cultural moments. During an early visit to Eswatini, the team was blown away by the soul-stirring voice of Lanyamane (Miriam Dlamini).
“Her performance was electric,” Markgraaff recalls. “She later joined us on set with a troupe of Swati dancers, braving the icy winter of 2024 to bring vibrant energy to our scenes.” In 2025, Dlamini teamed up with composer Philip Miller and Zulu vocalist Mbuso Khoza to craft a soundtrack that’s sure to give you chills.
From the stunning costumes by SAFTA winner Shelia Masondo to the breathtaking Swati choreography, every detail screams African excellence.

A thread weaved between seasons

Season 2 picks up where the first left off, following Shaka (Lemogang Tsipa) and Queen Nandi (Nomzamo Mbatha) as they arrive at KwaNobamba, where Shaka steps up as a strategic genius and empire builder. “We’re diving into Shaka the visionary,” says Philiso.
The returning cast is pure fire: Thembinkosi Mthembu as Dingiswayo, Wiseman Mncube as Zwide, Dawn Thandeka King as Mkabayi, Khabonina Qubeka as Ntombazi, and Mondli Makhoba as Ngomane. Nomzamo Mbatha, fresh off her Best African Actress win at the 2024 Septimius Awards, delivers a Nandi that’s fierce and unforgettable.
“The Swati storyline adds a bold new layer to this epic, exploring power, loyalty, and the spiritual roots of an empire,” says Markgraaff.
