SABC radio station Umhlobo Wenene FM is working on growing its listenership and spreading its wings beyond the borders of South Africa through a Khenketha NoMhlobo Cultural initiative.
The isiXhosa-language station’s breakfast show team is embarking on a cultural exchange journey to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe from September 18 to 21.
According to the station, the programme’s primary objective is to encourage stronger relations among listeners in the two countries through a shared cultural heritage.
Umhlobo Wenene FM, which also celebrates 14 years of hosting the longest-standing breakfast show, will have a series of interactive events and discussions around the isiXhosa language, music, traditions and customs.
Business manager Loyiso Bala expressed his elation about the initiative.
He also said the station is thrilled to offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for one fortunate listener and partner to accompany the station’s personalities on this journey.
“We are thrilled to embark on this cultural and heritage journey during the month of September, which coincides with Heritage and Tourism Month in South Africa and World Tourism Day.
“The winner will have the privilege of participating in the cultural exchange programme, engaging in various tourism activities, and immersing themselves in the vibrant isiXhosa-speaking community in Bulawayo,” said Bala.
Bala said their three-pronged approach to this year’s national and global commemorations transcends geographical boundaries and unites isiXhosa speakers.
“This initiative is a testament to the power of language and culture in bringing communities together.”
In May, the station celebrated 63 years of existence through a family fun-day event held at Buffalo Park Cricket Stadium in East London.
