Ex-Bafana striker ‘Killer’ Mphela dumps VW car salesman’s job

After a media frenzy in November when he joined a car dealership as a salesman, retired Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns lethal striker Katlego “Killer” Mphela has parted ways with VW Lindsay Saker Midrand.

This is after the dealership gave him a lifeline to get his life back on track. He is now the ambassador of sports betting company Betway.

It was reported at the time that one of Mzansi’s best strikers of all time was making a killing, selling VW cars in abundance like he used to score goals.

However, his stint in his new vocation lasted for only two months before he called it quits. The 39-year-old Mphela has also played for Kaizer Chiefs.

Became talk of the town as car salesman

There was a huge interest when Mphela joined the car dealership. He was on almost every radio sports show in Gauteng. And he graced many social media websites because of his new journey after an impressive career.

He even received praise from his former coach, Pitso Mosimane for his courage and for making a difference in his life after football.

“He left us and said that he was pushing more on the football side,” said a former VW Lindsay Saker Midrand dealership employee.

“[Mphela] said he had new football ventures and community projects that he was involved with. He was doing well here selling cars, but I think he left us for better things. [The man] has matured well, and I am told that he is doing well with his football things,” he added.

Leaving car business to return to sports projects

Mphela’s business representative, Godfrey Baloyi, spoke to Sunday World. He confirmed  that Mphela had severed ties with the car dealership. “Mphela is busy with his role as ambassador of Betway. He also does coaching clinics and the Killer Mphela Easter Tournament. So there was no time for him. He just wanted to pursue his football projects,” said Baloyi.

Mphela was brought into the limelight by Jomo Sono, who turned him into a top striker at Jomo Cosmos in 2003. He was so remarkable that he went to Europe and joined Strasbourg RC, and later Stade de Reims. Mphela came back to the PSL when Mosimane roped him in to play for Matsatsantsa a Pitori. Big spenders Sundowns later snatched him for a massive transfer fee.

Towards the end of his career, he joined Amakhosi and retired from the Royal Eagles in 2017. He is most remembered for the 2009 Fifa Confederations Cup goal he scored against Spain in the third-place play-offs. His free kick from 30 metres was enough to beat the then-world’s best goalkeeper, Iker Casillas. The strike won Goal of the Tournament. Mphela represented Bafana Bafana 53 times. He also led the SA attack at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
