Godfather of black entertainment Clarence Avant has died

Clarence Avant, fondly known as the Black Godfather, died at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday aged 92.

The cause of Avant’s death, who spanned the worlds of music, sports, entertainment and politics, has not been shared.

His children Nicole and Alexander, as well as son-in-law Ted Sarandos, wrote in a statement: “It is with a heavy heart that the Avant/Sarandos family announce the passing of Clarence Alexander Avant.

“Through his revolutionary business leadership, Clarence became affectionately known as ‘the Black Godfather’ in the worlds of music, entertainment, politics, and sports.

“Clarence leaves behind a loving family and a sea of friends and associates that have changed the world and will continue to change the world for generations to come. The joy of his legacy eases the sorrow of our loss.”

Avant, the oldest of eight children, was born on February 25 1931 in small-town North Carolina.

After spending most of his childhood in North Carolina, he moved to New Jersey as a teenager, getting his start in the music business as a club manager of Teddy P’s Lounge in Newark.

He was later mentored by jazz great Louis Armstrong’s manager Joe Glaser.

Since the announcement of Avant’s passing, tributes have been streaming in. In a statement, former US president Barack Obama and his wife extended their condolences.

“Clarence Avant was one of our favorite people,” said the Obamas.

“He exemplified a certain level of cool and street smarts that allowed him to move confidently into worlds that nobody had prepared him for, never doubting he could figure it out.

“Clarence was part of a generation that served as a bridge from a time when there was very little opportunity for black people to a time when doors began to open.

“He demanded the world [to] make room, and he paved the way for the rest of us.

“Michelle and I will always be grateful for Clarence’s friendship and wise counsel. Our thoughts are with Nicole, Alex, Ted, and everyone whose life was touched by a truly remarkable man.”

American musician Maxwell wrote: “Clarence Avant, The Godfather of music, rest in eternal peace.”

American rapper TI wrote: “Maaaan, woke up this morning and couldn’t believe this news. RIP to The Black Godfather Clarence Avant. Thank you for all the wisdom you’ve shared and the path you paved for artists like myself.”
