Fashion industry awards reward its best designers

Shwa attended the Fashion Industry Awards South Africa (Fiasa), which happened to be one of the most anticipated events on the South African fashion calendar last week Thursday. Fiasa concluded its third annual celebration of SA’s fashion industry in a spectacular rare show piece.

The glitzy affair, which took place at the Garden Venue, Randburg, brought together luminaries from the world of fashion, make-up and entertainment.

The main purpose was to recognise and honour outstanding individuals who have made a significant contribution to the industry, recognising the excellence of both our pioneers and the present-day creatives.

The awards saluted the triumphs and achievements of the fashion industry and its value chain by acknowledging and applauding the best in their areas of work – from the smallest stitch to the magnificent masterpieces featured in the South African fashion industry.

The spectacular event was hosted by Penny Lebyane, dressed in a yellow number, as usual. Shwa must conclude there is something magical about yellow, the colour of sunshine.

The awards celebrated every sector of the ecosystem for its contribution to the growth of the industry, and for infusing new life, and bringing back the trademark vibrancy of the South African creative fashion industry as we knew it.

Shwa spotted Sihle the Designer. He looked all dolled up and stuff and couldn’t stop wondering if the guy is guilty of not delivering a wedding gown he was supposed to deliver to that bride.

Gert-Johan Coetzee made a grand entrance to deliver the Fashion Designer of the Year that was snatched by Hangwani Nengovhela of Rubicon Clothing.

Hangwani and Gert-Johan showed why they are lionised as one of the best by dressing up in their brands.

I mean you can’t make something and not wear it.

It just does not make sense.

Orapeleng Modutle, who won an award too, arrived fashionably late – as usual. But ke, Shwa understands, it’s a busy time for designers, right now.

A big round of applause to Oupa Bopape for winning the Excellence in SA Entertainment Photography award. Where would Shwa be without you and your camera skills?
