Kwaito legend and music boss Arthur Mafokate has handed over the reigns of his business empire to his son Lesego Mafokate.
Mafokate senior celebrated his birthday on Monday by granting himself a long-term wish of seeing his bloodline take over his iconic record label 999 Music by appointing his son Lesego as the CEO.
The oi oi hitmaker told Sunday World that he has been planning this move for a while and decided to appoint Lesego, who started in his new post with immediate effect.
“Been toying around with the idea but was equally aware that he was still at school. Since he has completed his degree and his passion for music is still there, this might be a big stepping stone for his future,” Arthur said.
The muso will stay on as the chairman of the company while he mentors and supervises the young CEO in his new position.
“I feel like since I don’t have much to do, I might as well spend time mentoring him. I have mentored a lot of great administrators in the music business and why not try him too?”
Arthur said he is expecting the new music boss to move the company to adapt to changes and innovations in the music business, as well as new policies.
“I am excited as this is a legacy thing and all parents would always want to see their legacies restored one way or the other,” he said.
Lesego said he is ready to give this new challenge his all.
“Only God knows. Was I ready when I started from my school days? We will never get to know unless we try,” said Lesego.
999 Music was founded by Arthur in 1992 and went on to establish and groom top musicians including Kelly Khumalo, Chomee, Cici, Mzambiya, Ishmael and DJ AJ.
