Maskandi star to share stage with US crooner Jeffrey Osborne

The much-anticipated Jeffrey Osborne: You Should Be Mine South African Tour, which is set to take place in March, will open with a performance by maskandi sensation Khuzani “Indlamlenze” Mpungose.

Some of the artists and DJs set to entertain in Pietermaritzburg include Vusi Nova, Brian Temba, DJ Msizi Shembe (Metro FM), Collen Zondo (Gagasi 99.5 FM), Mzokoloko (Vuma FM), Ntando, Linda Gcwensa, Zakwe, Duncan, Mazola, Kenny K, and Nhlanhlo.

The multiple award-winning maskandi singer will cater for the indigenous sound lovers at the Pietermaritzburg Athletic Stadium on March 23.

People appreciate my work

An elated Mpungose said: “It’s a big deal to me to be chosen amongst other maskandi singers to feature in this big line-up.

“It shows that people appreciate my work despite the fact that, in some quarters, this sound is still looked down upon because we sing in our indigenous language.

“I will ensure that I don’t disappoint so that I leave an indelible mark on other music promoters who bring international stars like Jeffrey Osborne to our shores.”

Osborne, a former member of soul group L.T.D., is coming to South Africa for the first time. He said he was looking forward to the tour.

“I am so excited to be coming to South Africa for the first time. It has always been my wish to visit this country, which has such a beautiful history. When the opportunity was presented, there was no way I was going to refuse,” Osborne said.

“I am looking forward to meeting my fans from South Africa and seeing this beautiful country and what it has to offer. I want my fans to have the time of their lives. I promise them a good time.”

A successful solo career

The R&B crooner began his professional singing career in 1969. At L.T.D., he was originally brought on as the drummer and eventually became the lead vocalist.

After more than 10 years with the band, Osborne decided to pursue a solo career, which produced top hits such as You Should Be Mine, Don’t You Get So Mad, Stay With Me Tonight, and a duet with Dionne Warwick, Love Power.

Before heading to Durban, Osborne is scheduled to be at the Grand Arena in Cape Town on March 20.

His fans in Gauteng will get to see him at SunBet Arena on March 28. Osborne will wrap up his tour at the Emperor’s Palace in Ekurhuleni on March 29.
