MEC Chiloane warns of man robbing Gauteng child care centres

Gauteng education MEC Matome Chiloane has warned members of the public about a man who is robbing people at early childhood development (ECD) centres.

The suspect has been seen travelling with two children, moving from one centre to another. The man is posing as a parent looking for placement  for his child.

It is alleged that this man proceeds to rob ECD staff of their cellphones and valuables. All while pretending to apply for the children he is with.

Targeted Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng ECD centres

“The suspect is alleged to have robbed centres in Daveyton (Ekurhuleni) and parts of Sedibeng. He is said to drive a red Toyota Etios with the registration number FZ19LV GP.

“We urge the public and ECD centres to be vigilant and report this individual to the law enforcement agencies for necessary action.”

Meanwhile, the Gauteng Department of Education has received over half a million online applications for the Grade 1 and 8 intakes for next year.

Chiloane made this announcement on Wednesday. He said the online admissions system recorded a total of 512,237 applications.

Over half a million applications for 2025 placements

Applicants who have submitted complete applications can expect placement offers on September 16, 2024.

The department advised parents who have already submitted applications to log into their accounts and verify their details. They can use their username and password to ensure they have completed all necessary steps.

“The GDE remains committed to assisting parents who may not have the means to apply online.

Support available at schools, walk-in centres for applicants

“All schools in the province, as well as our 80 decentralised walk-in centres, are available to provide support. [They will assist] throughout the application process… to ensure that no child is left behind due to technological constraints.

“The phenomenal number of applications we have received demonstrates the trust parents place in our education system. The Gauteng department of education remains committed to providing quality education for all. And ensuring a fair and transparent admissions process.

“As we move forward with this crucial process, we look forward to accommodating everyone in our schools. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all parents for their cooperation and understanding during this important period,” said Chiloane.
