Access to education is on top of Higher Education, Science and Innovation Minister Blade Nzimande’s agenda.
Nzimande announced a few days ago that the department will build the University of Science and Innovation in Ekurhuleni and the Crime Detection University in Hammanskraal outside Pretoria, noting that construction plans have started following cabinet’s approval.
“A feasibility study funded through the infrastructure and efficiency grant to the value of R6-million is under way to advise on the size and shape of these two institutions,” Nzimande said.
According to the minister, the Crime Detection University will deal with crime detection and fighting. It is hoped to improve the quality of general and specialised SAPS investigations.
The University of Science and Innovation is expected to focus specifically on science and innovation subjects and robotics.
After he pleaded with employers to consider Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College graduates, Nzimande said his department plans to renovate 16 TVET Colleges across the country.
