Hulisani Mushiane, 33, is the founder and managing director of Makarina Consultancy, an environmental consulting company with branches in Limpopo and Gauteng. Established in 2012, the company consults mainly in mining industry, and does everything from compliance to facilitating business deals between prospective clients. Growing up, Mushiane used to travel a lot with her parents, triggering a passion to study environmental science. “I have always loved to conserve the environment based on the travelling experiences that afforded me an opportunity to interact with different people and learn how they perceived conservation,” says Mushiane. Through her company, Mushiane takes part in public and stakeholder engagements and deals with water use applications and other environmental management programmes. The company also focuses on geotechnical studies, monitoring and audits, mining rights applications and environmental authorisations. She is also a renowned academic who holds multiple academic qualifications, including masters in of environmental management to project management, a qualification conferred on her by the North-West University. She also serves in various national boards, including the South African National Parks.
