Jabulisile Makhubu, 32, defines herself not just an environmental activist in her community of Wakkerstroom, in Mpumalanga, but as a community volunteer who helps to tackle persistent socio-economic issues such as hunger and poverty. She developed this sense of commitment after graduating from high school in 2009 and was motivated by poor service delivery in her community. A few years later, in 2015, she got involved in the environmental sector. Makhubu is the chairperson of non-profit organisation, Mabola Alternatives Committee, which is made up of seven individuals who advocate for the exploration of sustainable socio-economic opportunities in the community. Occasionally, they conduct campaigns that encourage people to, for instance, plant vegetable gardens in an environmentally-friendly manner. “As a result, we are slowly but surely winning the fight against hunger,” she says. This passionate community activist is also concerned about ensuring all community members of Wakkerstroom are fully informed of socio-economic development opportunities and activities in their area for their own benefit. “I try to ensure that the voice of the people on the ground is heard for the benefit of everyone in the community.”
