Keenly observing his dad work the land in Malelane, Mpumalanga, and making a success of his enterprise inspired Nkosinathi Mduduzi Mkhumbane to also get into farming. “I was inspired by the hard work he put into his business,” he says. “He was not formally trained as a farmer, yet he was able to make a profit and put me through school.” Mkhumbane, 34, born in Naas township in Mpumalanga, is the owner of Mawela Poultry, a broiler (chicken that is bred and raised for meat production) producing project housed at Rooiwal Agricultural Park, Lynwood, Tshwane, on 5ha of leased land from the City of Tshwane. Mawela Poultry, which was established in 2018, produces 20 000 broilers a month and has three full-time employees. The farm hosts university students – this year it took in five from the Tshwane University of Technology – to get hands-on farming experience. Mkhumbane, who has a Diploma in Plant Management from Lowveld College of Agriculture, now called the University of Mpumalanga, aims to become one of the leading industrialists within the agricultural sector in the near future.
