Nomandla Ngcoya is a trailblazing bio-chemist from Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. Ngcoya is a proud owner of D Chem Group, a chemical manufacturing company that produces detergents, cosmetics and perfumes. Despite operating in a male-dominated world of chemistry, she is determined to make it. One of the major challenges she faced was being undermined whenever she informed people she was in the chemical manufacturing space. It was only when she changed the way she introduced herself: “Hi, I am Nomandla Ngcoya, a PhD student at UKZN and I am the founder of D Chem Group, a detergent, cosmetic, and perfume manufacturing company” that she was taken seriously in the industry. Her products are available at Spar Selgro Centre and Mphophomeni Mall in Imbali Youth Enterprise Park, both in Pietermaritzburg. She also has a factory shop in Pietermaritzburg. Ngcoya’s love for empowering others manifests in her allowing different institutions to place learners for their practicals or in-service training in her company, without getting paid for hosting them. D Chem Group employs three people excluding Ngcoya.
