With some educators, the passion is palpable and it restores the public’s confidence in the profession and calling. Mongeni Mabusha Revonia from Botlokwa, Polokwane, is one such educator, with a belief that education shapes independent and critical thinkers who will positively impact the economy. The Mabjwaneng Primary School teacher is very impactful and influential in her job, because not only is she a professional, but also an active citizen committed to building her community. The 26-year-old is wide awake to the system thorns. Inclusivity, or lack thereof, is but one such thorn; only the academically gifted learners are able to thrive without obstacles. Struggling learners, who need time and attention, are left behind. Another challenge that is more general is the neglect of boys, a habit that breeds angry boys and men. For this reason the young teacher launched a Groom a Boy Child initiative, which helps to teach boys to express their feelings. Another important principle fostered by the initiative is that violence solves nothing.
