Sifundo Mzwakhe Xulu is the Co-founder and chairperson of Calibrating Minds Society NPO, an organisation that promotes academic scholarship and excellence in the Empangeni and Richards Bay, KZN. The NPO’s mission is to promote the art of debate among high school learners, host career expos that provide learners with access to a wide range of career opportunities, while also providing mental health talks to learners to help them cope with the challenges of adolescence. Every year, Xulu convenes the annual Empangeni Debating League Championship, where hundreds of learners from rural and urban high schools participate in competitive debating, and are selected to progress to provincial and national schools debating levels. Despite the limited resources and support the NPO receives, he continues to demonstrate resilience and courage through his leadership, which has earned him recognition among 100 South African Shining Stars (Inside Education), Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans and 100 Africa’s Brightest Young Minds.
