Author – A Journey Worth the Ride
Tlotlisang David Mhlambiso is not only excelling academically but is also a published author and a passionate advocate for the use of African languages in literature. Mhlambiso recently obtained his Bachelor of Education degree (cum laude) from the University of the Free State and is currently enrolled for BEd Hons, specialising in curriculum studies at the same institution. Mhlambiso was named a National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) Education Sector Trailblazer in 2023 and one of South Africa’s 100 Shining Stars in the arts and media. He was also awarded the Executive Director of Student Affairs: Student of the Year Award 2023 for his innovative work in the African narrative space. Mhlambiso’s literary works include three books and contributions to several poetry anthologies. He also actively engages with the community, promoting literacy through book clubs and outreach programmes. “Reading and writing are ways of addressing societal dilemmas while liberating the mind to think independently. My passion is driven by the low literacy levels in South Africa, and the struggle to use our African languages in academic spaces,” he says. Reflecting on post-apartheid South Africa, Mhlambiso emphasises the unifying power of sports, the arts and media. “These have made us realise our diversity as South African citizens and have channeled us to be more inclusive.”
