Central University of Technology’s campus radio station, CUT FM 105.8, introduced Xolo Busakwe to the media industry, a space he continues to make a name for himself. At the station, the multitalented creative hosted and produced a lunchtime show called The Midday Experience, winning the hearts of listeners with his unique broadcasting style and fresh perspective on trending topics. But it was only when Busakwe moved to Johannesburg that stars started to align in his favour. “I was presented with an exciting opportunity to join a television production team, and I eagerly accepted the offer. This transition marked a significant shift in my career path from radio to television production, and I embraced the new challenge with enthusiasm and dedication,” he recalls. Today, Busakwe’s profile includes being part of the production team for MNet’s My Kitchen Rules South Africa, Netflix’s Young, Famous and African Season 3 as well as The Ultimatum South Africa. These and other opportunities have validated the vision he has always had about his career. For the arts to have an increased impact, Busakwe argues that young people should be involved in the industry’s decision-making processes as they have innovative ideas and a deep understanding of contemporary issues. “By empowering and supporting young artists, creators, and cultural influencers to actively participate in shaping the direction of the arts sector, we can ensure that diverse voices are heard, new narratives are shared, and the arts continue to evolve and resonate with audiences across the country and beyond.”
