Sipho Tshabalala looked around himself and used what he had available to improve his life. In 2025, the 30-year-old was the top learner in the Gauteng region in the MTN Skills Academy after completing a whopping 151 courses. He heard about the academy through a youth progression programme and decided to pursue it because it aligned with his interest in technology and continuous learning. The MTN Skills Academy was launched to bridge the digital skills gap and to empower youngsters like Sipho in training programmes like coding, web development and digital marketing. Once completed, participants are more competent in digital skills, making them more employable. Sipho grew up in Meadowlands, and with limited resources, he understood that he would need to be resourceful about improving his life and circumstances. “I was raised by a single parent. I found inspiration and opportunity through local libraries, where I got access to information, books, and technology that broadened my perspective and showed me what was possible. This exposure played a significant role in shaping my ambitions and developing my passion for learning, technology, and self-improvement,” he says. After school, Sipho says he didn’t know how to bridge the gap between employment and education. The MTN Skills Academy assisted Sipho with mentorship, exposure to industry practices, networking opportunities, and guidance from experienced professionals. “It helped me develop both technical and professional skills while preparing me for future career opportunities. What stood out most was the genuine investment in personal growth. The programme not only focused on skills development but also encouraged confidence, professionalism, and a mindset of continuous learning,” he says. Sipho says young people in similar circumstances as him should stay committed to learning. “Seek opportunities wherever they exist, and remain persistent even when progress feels slow. Every skill you gain and every opportunity you pursue can bring you one step closer to achieving your goals.”
