Basetsana Confidence Sheane
Nominee's Province:
Free State
Project Name/Description:
Bachelor of Education student, University of the Free State
This young woman loves to see young people read, and she takes pleasure when such is taken passionately, and the joys drawn from reading are evident in the youths’ faces.
Sheane is a gem, and a gift to the literacy fraternity as she continues to fight the good fight – aiming to inspire and instil the culture of reading and literacy among primary school learners, mostly focused on the township of Masilo in Theunissen.
Sheane is a Free State support team provincial manager at the Empowervate Trust’s Youth Citizens Action Programme (YCAP) and a founder of the Tsebo Ke Lesedi literacy initiative.
The inspirational bookie has long realised that not only is her community struggling with socio-economic challenges but there are also low literacy levels, even in the community surrounding her own.
Sheane’s work has notably been recognised, as a young change agent driven to see change in her community. Among the recognition she has achieved are the Inside Education 100 South African Shining Stars 2023, Free State World Newspaper Game Changers of the Year 2023, YCAP Change Agent for Sustainability Award 2023, and she also made it into the Funda Mzansi Championship 2023 Top 3 in the Sesotho Spelling Bee category.
She lives by the quote by Ntozake Shange: “Where there is a woman there is magic.”
