Rent-a-vote contests bad for maskandi
The success of South Africa’s leading music genre, maskandi, is turning out to be its worst enemy.
This has culminated in the many “competitions” where smart ones see the opportunity to relieve maskandi followers of their last cents while passionately following their favourite musicians.
As if the bogus UkhoziFM Song of the Year Competition that rakes in millions from votes by maskandi followers is not enough, event organisers are now
following suit.
This toxic trend that is open to all sorts of rigging has gone too far it is now destroying innocent musicians.
Just recently an ugly spat between dominant maskandi stars Menzi and Limit over their placement in the Mother of All Maskandi Festivals voting competition was unfortunate.
Menzi was leading for the longest time with votes and a dramatic spike in Limit’s numbers in the race to win a Toyota Quantum minibus sparked controversy that there had been rigging in the latter’s favour.
As such, both musicians have vowed not to ever participate in any competition where a popular vote is the decider.
Shwa believes that all such competitions must shut down once and for all, starting with UkhoziFM and their Song of the Year scam.
That is the only way to save maskandi and its multitudes of loyal followers and supporters.
