Cassper Nyovest adds his voice behind sexual health campaign

Rapper and businessman Refiloe Phoolo, popularly known as Cassper Nyovest, has urged people to protect themselves and take precautions when engaging in sexual activities.

A few months ago, before he got married, the rapper revealed that he had a sex addiction, but found God, and got saved. This helped him realise the dangers of risky sexual behaviours. And he has put his weight behind the campaign for healthy sexual behaviours targeted at the youth.

Rates of HIV infections on the rise

Latest reports show that girls and young women between the ages of 15-24 in South Africa are affected by the HIV virus. This has contributed to 25% of new infections.

Young men are said to be less likely to be diagnosed and treated. This increases their likelihood of transmitting HIV to their partners.

The situation gives more reason for the youth to make informed decisions about healthy sexual behaviours. They must also learn their options. These include wearing a condom and taking PrEP (post-exposure meds). They may also abstain from sex, know their status, and give or ask for consent.

#ForevaWenaChatbot campaign

Nyovest, through his social media platforms, has touched on the topic and encouraged his fans to have conversations with the #ForeverWena Chatbot.

“Make sure you use a condom, protect yourself or use the Prep pill. If there’s something that you’re not sure of, we have the thing for you, it’s called the #ForeverWenaChatbot. Here you …can hit us up and we will give you the information you need,” he said in a video.

#ForeverWena is a South African movement that aims to empower people to take charge of their sexual health. It encourages open discussions that are both factual and informative about healthy sexual behaviour and choices.

Responsibility of each citizen

Dr Linda-Gail Bekker, Professor of Medicine and CEO of the Desmond Tutu Health Foundation, said as a nation we need to address the ongoing high rate of HIV infections.

“#ForeverWena is certainly an empowering way to do it. Every young South African deserves access to accurate, tailored information and resources. This is so that they can make informed decisions and healthier sexual choices. For themselves, their partners, and their collective future,” said Bekker.
