BMW iX3 crowned World Car of the Year 2026 ahead of SA launch

The all-new BMW iX3 has made global headlines after scooping two of the automotive industry’s most coveted accolades – the 2026 “World Car of the Year” and “World Electric Vehicle” titles – cementing its status as a serious contender in the fast-growing premium electric SUV segment.

Announced at the New York International Auto Show, the double victory was decided by an international jury of 98 motoring journalists from 33 countries, who evaluated 57 vehicles for the overall title and 43 contenders in the electric category.

For BMW, the win marks its 10th and 11th victories at the World Car Awards, underlining the significance of the iX3 as the first model in its next-generation Neue Klasse line-up, a new era of electrification, digitalisation and design.

Specced to the hilt

The iX3 arrives with serious credentials. Powered by dual electric motors, it produces 345kW and 645Nm of torque, sprinting from 0–100km/h in just 4.9 seconds. It also boasts a claimed driving range of up to 805km (WLTP), while its 800-volt architecture enables ultra-fast charging of up to 400kW – allowing drivers to add significant range in minutes.

Inside, BMW introduces its new Panoramic iDrive system, anchored by a full-width windscreen display and a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, supported by a new operating system and high-performance “superbrain” computers designed to enhance driving dynamics, infotainment and automated driving functions.

Technological quantum leap

Locally, the new iX3 is expected to arrive in South Africa in the third quarter of 2026, where it will enter an increasingly competitive electric SUV battleground.

Key rivals will include the upcoming Volvo EX60, the all-electric Mercedes-Benz GLC EV and the already-launched Lexus RZ – all vying for a slice of the premium EV market.

BMW says the iX3 represents a “technological quantum leap”, introducing sixth-generation eDrive technology, bidirectional charging capability and significantly improved efficiency.

With global recognition now secured and a South African launch on the horizon, the BMW iX3 is shaping up to be one of the most important electric vehicle arrivals of 2026 and a potential benchmark for what comes next in the premium EV space.
