Dear reader
In the story published on Friday, September 15 on our website under the headline: “Thug who terrorised emergency crews gets his day in court,” we falsely stated that Gauteng health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba is an accused person in a case of kidnapping, hijacking and robbing emergency management services (EMS) personnel in Atteridgevile, Tshwane.
We also falsely mentioned that he was remanded in custody when he appeared in court and that his case was postponed to September 21.
In the same story, we incorrectly stated that Modiba is the spokesperson for the EMS.
As a matter of fact, he is not an accused person in this case. He is also not the spokesperson for the EMS, but rather speaks on behalf of the department of health in Gauteng.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that although the reporter, Coceka Magubeni, got her facts correct, the mistakes appear to have occurred in the editing process.
Sunday World regrets the error, retracts the story and apologises to Modiba, his family and colleagues for the embarrassment the story may have have caused.
