Criminal charges opened against Mashatile’s bodyguards

Criminal cases have been opened against the police officers involved in the assault of three civilians on the N1 highway in Fourways, north of Johannesburg on Monday.

Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, national police spokesperson, said: “In line with our SAPS [SA Police Service] disciplinary regulations, four of the members that are seen in the video have been served with notices from the employer with the intention to suspend them.

“In line with the procedure, they have been given an opportunity to provide representation on why they should not be suspended.”

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) investigators said the police watchdog has made contact with family members of the victims to assist them to lay criminal charges.

In addition, IPID has also engaged with the SAPS management, which agreed to fully cooperate with the investigators.

Mashatile acknowledged on Tuesday that the police officers are connected to his VIP security, and condemned the brutal force used.

The South African National Defence Union, which has since confirmed that the victims are members of the SA National Defence Force, said the IPID has encouraged them not to engage with the police while an investigation continues.
