Johannesburg- Recent floods in Qwaqwa in the Maluti-a-Phofung local municipality had claimed three lives in the area.
Mayor Gilbert Mokotso expressed his sadness by the loss of lives caused by the floods and he had visited the families of those affected.
“The matter of flash floods is receiving due attention from Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality. A Joint Operations Centre comprising of different stakeholders such as the SAPS, Free State Medical Emergency Services, Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality, Departments of Social Development, Roads, and Public Works among others have already been established and working. It pains us that three lives were lost in Qwaqwa, and this is sadly regrettable. We sent our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” said Mokotso.
Mokotso urged communities to exercise extreme caution during floods.
Spokesperson for the Thabo Mofutsanyane District Municipality, Mamogolo Moshigu said that the district mayor, Conny Msibi had visited the families and assessed the damage caused by the storm.
“The district mayor did an oversight in Qwaqwa and assessed the damage in order to advise the Maluti-a-Phofung to look into the matter through implementation. The district mayor is in communication with the local mayor to act accordingly on the work that needs to be done,” said Moshigu.
