Former Zimbabwe and SuperSport United goalkeeper George Chigova has passed on, according to reports from Zimbabwe.
The big goalkeeper is said to have collapsed and died. He was 32.
The exact circumstances of his death remain unclear, but it is alleged that he suffered a heart attack. It is reported that he was diagnosed with a heart illness in July and has not been well for some time.
Chigova was released by SuperSport at the end of last season and was no longer with the club.
He initially joined the club in 2014 from Dynamos of Harare. However, due to a lack of game time, he made a move to Polokwane City. After five years, Chigova returned to SuperSport.
United spokesperson Mazolman Sikhosana said that he heard about the rumour but was not at liberty to comment as Chigova was no longer in their books.
iHarare.com reported: “Chigova faced a health setback in July of this year when he suffered a heart attack, forcing him to step away from the field until his unfortunate demise this Wednesday.
“In 2018, Chigova garnered attention for his outstanding performances at the Cosafa Cup. Heroic penalty saves played a crucial role in Zimbabwe reaching the final.
“Tragically, Chigova’s passing follows closely on the heels of he former Ghana national team player and head coach Rahman Gambo, adding another layer of sorrow to the football community.”
