IFP adds its hand to sharpening of axe for eThekwini mayor’s scalp

The axe is being sharpened for eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda‘s head as more opposition parties in the only metro in KwaZulu-Natal call for his sacking.

The IFP is the latest party to call for the head of Kaunda, an ANC appointee, arguing that he had reneged on his political oversight duties and ran the municipality to the ground.

“Under the leadership of councillor Kaunda, eThekwini has been subjected to a number of embarrassments most notable the misuse of municipal finance during the Covid-19 pandemic,” read a notice of motion tabled by the IFP on Tuesday.

The IFP is the third biggest party in the metro after the DA.

The party further charged that the delays in providing housing to Durban flood victims and the R1.9 billion in municipal Grant’s which was allegedly returned to the national treasury was sufficient grounds that Kaunda was unable to perform his duties satisfactorily.

According to the Section 53 of the local government municipal systems act, political parties are empowered to raise a motion of no confidence in a sitting political head should they fail to perform the stipulated functions.

Other parties who also wants Kaunda out in the cold includes the EFF, DA and ActionSA.
