Impersonators of Joburg metro police nabbed in Soweto

Two male suspects aged 26 and 32 were arrested for possession of a suspected stolen Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) motor vehicle in Jabulani, Soweto.

While conducting crime-prevention patrols in Jabulani, officers noticed a white BMW X3 being driven recklessly. The vehicle had flashing blue lights fitted on the front and rear windscreens, as well as on the grill.

“The police officers conducted an inquiry using the registration of the vehicle. The results revealed that it belonged to Idrive Car Rental. The officers became suspicious as to why a rental vehicle was fitted with blue lights,” said the JMPD.


The officers stopped the vehicle and asked the occupants for identification, as the passenger was allegedly wearing a JMPD director’s combat cap, but both the occupants did not have appointment cards to identify themselves as police officers.

Further investigation revealed that the vehicle belongs to the JMPD and is used at its head quarters in Johannesburg.

The JMPD said while searching the vehicle and the occupants, the offers noticed that they had been drinking alcohol inside the car and the did not have a drivers licence.

The duo was taken in for questioning, as the officers wanted to known how the acquired the vehicle. The men said it was given to them by an employee at the metro police department.

A case of theft of a motor vehicle was opened and registered at Protea Glen and the suspects were detained at the Jabulani police station and charged with possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle and impersonating a police officer.
