Life behind bars for men guilty of raping minors

A 49-year-old man accused of raping a four-year-old girl in 2019 has been found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Bloemfontein magistrate’s court on Monday.

The man lured the child to his house while her grandmother was sleeping, saying he had had bought clothes for her.

Captain Loraine Earle said he undressed the victim and raped her.

“The victim reported this matter to her grandmother and the case was reported to the police,” said Earle.

In an unrelated case the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in North West confirmed that a Ethiopian national who also raped a minor was also sentenced to life.

Henry Mamothame, NPA spokesperson, said the rapist owned a shop at an informal settlement called Scotland in Coligny, North West, where he raped his victim.

“In June 2021 the victim was sent to the convict’s shop to buy items and upon arrival, the man was alone and dragged her to a shack behind the shop where he raped her,” said Mamothame.
