Police in Limpopo are investigating an inquest and a murder case after a woman was found dead with stab wounds on her neck while her alleged killer hung himself at the weekend.
Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said police in Mokwakwaila and Tzaneen are probing the incidents after a 23-year-old woman was found murdered at Ga-Femane village on Saturday afternoon.
Mashaba said the lifeless body of the suspect, who was on the run after allegedly killing the woman, was found hanging at Khebabane village on Sunday.
Calm before the storm
“According to the police report, they received information from community members that there is a person found dead at Femane village,” said Mashaba.
“When they arrived, they found the body of an African woman lying on the ground and facing up with stabbed injuries on the neck.
“It is alleged that the victim received a call from the suspect, who happened to be her boyfriend. They met and had drinks in town [Giyani].
“They then went to the victim’s residence in Ga-Femani village, wherein the suspect stabbed the victim with an unknown object and fled the scene.
“Later on, the deceased’s sister received a call that the victim had been murdered.”
16 days of activism
The attack comes as the country commemorates 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, which started on Saturday.
The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Maleboho Sebihleni while the man who hung himself is 41-year-old Sello Manyama.
It is alleged that after Manyama committed the murder, he went to his other girlfriend’s residence in Khebabane village where the couple was residing and apparently hung himself with an electric cable in a separate house on the same yard.
The second girlfriend was asleep in the other house.
Police investigations are continuing.
Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe “strongly condemned the the woman’s murder and called on communities to accelerate actions to end the scourge”.
