This week the University of South Africa added a special feather to the already colourful hat of global art icon Esther Mahlangu.
The 88-year-old, whose Ndebele artworks are sought-after the world over, was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in maths in recognition of her mathematical prowess.
“It is our firm conviction that her work is a form of mathematics and should thus be recognised as such,” said the university about the celebrated South African artist’s
geometric designs.
Mahlangu also has a retrospective exhibition showing at Iziko Museum in Cape Town.
Next stop for the exhibition is Joburg and then the US.
Halala, Gogo Mahlangu, Halala!
