Police intelligence services have been unleashed to track down the masterminds behind the burning of trucks which has engulfed the country.
“We will go after them, and they will face the full might of the law. We will not allow South Africa to be lawless and to have people running around on a rampage destroying the economic assets of our country,” lashed out President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The president was reacting to the torching of four trucks in Mpumalanga on Wednesday morning, which brings the number of trucks torched since Sunday to 21. Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, and Limpopo are considered as hot spots for the arson attacks.
In one incident, a woman suspected of being a hitchhiker sustained severe burn wounds when a truck was torched while she was inside. The driver managed to flee.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, Police minister Bheki Cele explained that there was a strong indication that the torching of trucks was well-coordinated.
He also allayed fears that the country might witness riots similar to those which took place in July 2021, leading to the demise of more than 300 people in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
Cele said the police intelligence services are on the ground to monitor and intercept any possible threat to the country’s security and safety.
