ANC national executive committee (NEC) member Mdu Manana is being criminally investigated by the police for allegedly breaking the Disaster Management Act.
This after Manana circulated a picture of himself and Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams enjoying lunch at his home during the lockdown. Ndabeni-Abrahams has since been placed on special leave for two-months by President Cyril Ramaphosa after South Africans expressed outrage at her and Manana’s behaviour.
She later paid a R1 000 admission of guilt fine.
Manana issued a statement in which he said the minister had to come to his house to collect sanitisers for the needy.
But the cops are now investigating him, under the guidance of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
This was revealed by a source who declined to be named as he is not allowed to speak to the media. NPA South Gauteng spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane confirmed the authority was guiding the police in their investigation against Manana.
“We can confirm that we are guiding the investigations and we will be in a position to give an update soon,” she said.
Police spokesperson Vish Naidoo could not be reached for comment. Manana said the police were at liberty to investigate him.
“The police must conduct their investigation without any impediment,” Manana said.
