The police in Sophiatown on Monday arrested three men after six suspected gang members started shooting in public in Westbury, Johannesburg.
The suspects are aged between 17 and 21 and have been charged with attempted murder. Three others managed to escape from the police.
The suspects will be profiled to establish if they can be linked to other crimes in the area, including the ongoing gang violence. The residents have been protesting against the violence for the last 21 days.
Police spokesperson Captain TJ de Bruyn said a 54-year-old woman was caught in the crossfire as she was leaving her home. She was rushed to Helen Joseph Hospital and is reportedly in a stable condition.
