Public urged not to panic as cholera spreads to North West

The department of health in the North West announced on Tuesday that it has recorded two laboratory confirmed cases of cholera.

The confirmed cases, according to the department, were detected in two men aged 38 and 68 from the Madibeng and Morelete local municipalities.

“Both patients presented with vomiting and diarrhoea, which are the symptoms of cholera,” said the department, urging the residents not to panic as cholera is preventable and curable.

“All people who experience cholera symptoms, with or without a local or international travel history, are advised to visit their nearest health facility,” it added.

The department further urged members of the public to take extra precautionary measures and maintain proper hand hygiene as the country experiences an outbreak of diarrhoeal disease or gastrointestinal infection, as well as the rising number of laboratory confirmed cases of cholera.

Up to date, 24 people have died from the cholera outbreak, with 23 being from Hammanskraal in the north of Pretoria and one death recorded in the Free State.
