Ramaphosa is jovial, but MK has surprised ANC – Mokonyane

ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa is “jovial and fine”, as the results of South Africa’s 2024 general elections continue to trickle in.

This is according to the ANC’s first deputy secretary-general, Nomvula Mokonyane, who was speaking to members of the media on Friday at the Independent Electoral Commission’s national results operation centre at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg.

As of 12.48pm on Friday, the ANC was leading the national vote with 41.94% of the electoral support, followed by the DA in second at 22.97% and the MK Party in third at 11.66%.

The EFF is in fourth place, sitting at 9.52%. Only 14 542 voting stations out of 23 293 had their results captured and processed.

ANC happy with the results

When asked if she has spoken to Ramaphosa and how he is feeling as the election results are trickling in, Mokonyane said: “We are speaking to him now. He is jovial and fine.”

Mokonyane said the ANC is “elated” with the national results thus far.

“The total votes cast at the moment remain around 8-million. We remain comfortable and elated. We are giving this process a chance until tomorrow,” she said.

“There will be a media briefing tomorrow by the national officials of the ANC, who will give an address to the people of South Africa.

“We are fine. We are above what was predicted. Predictions said we would get 36%.”

Regarding the MK Party’s strong performance in KwaZulu-Natal and its overall showing, Mokonyane said the ANC is surprised by former president Jacob Zuma’s party.

MK Party has surprised us

“We said it before the elections that it is unfortunate that we are contesting against an organised activist and a former president of the ANC.

“It was our concern. It [the MK Party] has surprised the ANC. Their performance is beyond what we expected.”

As of 1pm, the MK Party was leading KwaZulu-Natal with 44.13% of the votes, followed by the ANC in second place at 18.82% and the IFP in third place at 15,79%.

The DA and EFF are in fourth and fifth places, respectively, with the DA sitting at 14.65% and the EFF at 2.42%.
